Domestic Tasks are Foreign Territory

If you have been following my story, you know that I quit my job to work for ISH full time. While Caleb is still in the workforce, I am responsible for all administrative business regarding our group. Because I am so passionate about my work, I can get a lot done in a short amount of time. This leaves ample time for other things.

I am no stranger to cleaning. I actually enjoy watching rooms go from messy to spotless as a result of my efforts. I don’t particularly like washing dishes, but I do enjoy a clean kitchen. One task, though, that I have not been able to conquer just yet is cooking.

I would love for my husband to come home to wonderful, savory smells, and a spotless and comfortable home. The problem is, I know how to make basic meals, but I get sick and tired of chicken breasts, rice, pasta, and vegetables. I’m so over fried chicken, pork chops, and the like. I barely even eat meat anymore. I don’t know how to prepare vegetarian meals…or what to prepare for that matter.

Recently, I made a pot of chicken noodle soup. It smelled delicious, and even looked delicious. However, it tasted very blah! I was so disappointed. Caleb laughed at me. We both added salt and other spices before finishing our dinner. I’m starting to feel like Deborah Barone on Everybody Loves Raymond.

Earlier, I ran across a little gem of a movie that I had forgotten about for some time…Julie & Julia! (Light bulb moment) Now, I don’t plan on preparing that many dishes. I don’t even intend to cook and bake the same caliber of meals that the women created in their kitchens. I realized that there is help. I am going to take to the internet and invest in cook books for recipes. I am going to take cooking classes. That should be fun!

I won’t give up. I don’t believe that there is anything that I can’t do. I accept my own challenge, and I will keep you updated. I’ll upload photos of my meals with descriptions and an honest opinion of how everything tasted. Please let me know if you have some suggestions, recipes for some easy meals. I need your help too.

  • If you're looking for a quick way to make chicken, pork, or fish taste brand new, I enjoy the Kraft Fresh Take Cheese and Breadcrumbs mixes. They are in the refrigerated section for about $2.99, but you can get a $1 coupon off their website. The only one I've trained is the Italian Herb and Cheese. It's so good…that I am afraid to try anything else. SMH. For days where you want to spend more time in the kitchen, check out other cuisines. I love stirfry dishes (sweet and sour chicken, beef and broccoli…prep is usually 30 minutes if you chop up everything fresh! and the cook time varies). I look forward to seeing pictures of what you decide.

Thanks! That's something to try. And since Caleb loves cheese, that just might be a hit.
